Clean Sheets

i'm going to bed
without a fitted sheet.
i imagine you going to bed
in clean sheets.

trying to shape the dreams
before I fall asleep,
i imagine you going to bed
in clean sheets.

i'm living in filth,
wear my house shoes outside.
i imagine you going to bed
in clean sheets.

i prayed a million times
to a god i can't conceive:
i imagine you going to bed
in clean sheets.

when a woman stays over,
they ask if we can make the bed.
i imagine you going to bed
in clean sheets.

they organize the dirty laundry,
my shame irrelevant.
i imagine you going to bed
in clean sheets.

i wish i wasn't who i am,
when they go home disappointed.
i imagine you going to bed
in clean sheets.

twenty years later and still,
i am an incompetent housekeeper.
i imagine you going to bed
in clean sheets.

the laundry is never folded.
the kitchen is never clean.
i imagine you going to bed
in clean sheets.

the poetry is never done,
or organized correctly.
i imagine you going to bed
in clean sheets.

i imagine what i could have been
had i not been so afraid of love.
i imagine you going to bed
in clean sheets.
